Hidden Behind Technology

Artist’s Statement

This piece is called “Hidden Behind Technology” and is meant to get viewers to consider the ways that they hide behind phones and social media in various ways. The ambiguity of the image is meant to allow the viewer to translate the image’s meaning into what is real for the individual. Some hide behind phones from stressful situations, while procrastinating, or if they are anxious in a group of people. Technology is also hidden behind when debating intensely on social media. Arguments online are much easier to be rude without the repercussions that would happen in an in-person disagreement. Another aspect of hiding behind technology is when people have negative habits online that they hide from those around them and feel a lot of shame in association with them. I chose to use a red blanket to conceal the person in the image with because red is an intense confrontational challenging colour. The fact that the model is concealed by a blanket emphasizes the idea that she is hidden and viewers cannot totally tell what she is doing and why she is hiding to have ambiguity.
