SMART Goals
Based on my reflections and feedback from previous initial classroom experiences, the following are my goals to have a semester that strengthens my weaknesses and builds upon my strengths.
- Decide a time to come each week and consistently stick to that time, even if the mentor-teacher says they are flexible. Update: Arrive at 8:55 AM every Tuesday.
- Create organized lesson plans at least seven days in advance so your mentor teacher has supple time to give feedback.
- Implement “time blocking” every day that impacts my practicum: the day before practicum, the day of practicum, and days when I’m working on lesson plans. This seems like one of the best skills that brings me to be prepared with time to spare. Do this by scheduling time to eat, get ready for the day, drive, park, and walk to the class early in my calendar. This will allow me to understand how much time is needed for tasks and to not feel rushed and underprepared.
Things I’m Excited About
- I get to work with kids in a classroom again! I like encouraging and getting to know youth. Seeing them grow brings me a lot of joy.
- There are two classroom experience options I’m discussing with Michele about in Mission–my home! I look forward to being involved in my own city and not having to commute for an hour. I think I will feel more energized and connected to my home this year.
Things I’m Nervous About
- I’m anxious about not reaching people’s expectations.
- I’m also nervous about the idea of trying to appear more confident. I felt comfortable, but my mentor teacher didn’t see that in me until I gave my lesson plan last year. I have trouble knowing how much to get involved and initiate because I don’t want to overstep the mentor teacher’s classroom authority and flow. Last year the teacher thought I could be more involved, but I’m worried that if I apply her advice this year, the teacher might see it as too invasive or disruptive. I’m nervous about being perceived as annoying or less capable than I am.
